Murray Hotel
Murray Hotel
The elaborate, 600-room Murray Hill Hotel was opened in 1884, taking up an entire city block on Fifth Avenue at 40th Street. The hotel's location was chosen to take advantage of the influx of travelers arriving by train at the recently completed Grand Central Station. Some of the country's most prominent figures became guests at the six-story hotel, including P.T. Barnum and Mark Twain. Bernice Abbott's striking 1935 photograph highlights the structure's Victorian details, particularly the spiral-shaped fire escape which is skillfully woven into the building's architectural design.
