Gently drawing the eye towards ocean vistas, the central courtyard of the Jonas Salk institute was designed to be a contemplative space, and an inspirational setting for some of the world's most gifted medical researchers. Designed by Kahn in the early 1960s, the Salk Institute is considered his greatest architectural achievement, and was designated a national historic landmark in 1991.
