Rockefeller Center's Opening Night
Rockefeller Center's Opening Night
30 Rockefeller Center was completed in 1933 and is considered an icon of Art Deco design. Its towering height and graceful, streamlined styling makes it a focal point of midtown Manhattan even today, eight decades after its creation. It's been designated a national historic landmark and is one of New York's most recognized symbols. This stunning photo by Samuel H. Gottscho was taken just prior to the official opening of the building, in 1933. This inspiring view -- of the tower surrounded by open space -- no longer exists due to other buildings that have since been constructed around it.
