Elevated Train - Third Avenue
Elevated Train - Third Avenue
Better than any other photographer of her era, Berenice Abbott captured what New York felt like in the 1930s. This photo was taken in one of the city's decidedly un-glamorous neighborhoods, under the tracks of the elevated Third Avenue rail line. A single pedestrian walks in the bright sunlight that shines between the tracks (perhaps she is even pausing to look at the camera?) Modern skyscrapers gleam in the background -- a reminder of the dramatic contrasts New Yorkers encountered at every turn in that era of disorienting change and exhilarating progress.
